The matryoshki were painted by 17 different artists, some professional, some amateur, and all based in Scotland. The project, originally entitled “The Russian Cultural Demonstration”, was created as part of Highland 2007, but has now grown to involve other regions of Scotland. Nine of the artists involved are professional and include the celebrated Scots artist and playwright John Byrne, and also Russian artist Eugenia Vronskaya, who was recently voted the Highland Artist of the Year for 2007 and has exhibited extensively throughout Europe.
The dolls were exhibited at the Scottish Parliament last December, and later at Elgin Museum, Nairn and now Kelvingrove. Alongside the dolls there will also be a collection of other Russian items i.e. musical instruments, Russian Sarafans, assorted Matryoshki, samovar etc.

CHILDRENS DANCE ENSEMBLE

Message received from Vassa Vassa
If you can help please contact Olga, email vacca@bk.ru

Historical information sought

Message from Frances Welch:
I hoped you might be able to help with some research. I am writing a book about the evacuation of the Dowager Empress, Grand Duchess Xenia and other members of the Russian nobility from the Crimea in 1919. They travelled on the British naval battleship, HMS Marlborough. I have located papers belonging to officers and sailors on the ship. I have also read, I hope, all the relevant memoirs and biographies. I just wondered if you knew of anybody with any connection to this episode - perhaps descendants of the passengers. There were members of the Youssoupov and Obolensky family on board for instance.
Please contact us if you can help.

"More than 15 years we attended training to music of children from 5 till 14 years. Unfortunately, because of the heavy economic situation in which for a long time there was Russia, we on an extent several years on receive any financial support from the federal budget. The support rendered to us from the budget of the Moscow government – is minimum. I want to explain, that we do not collect a tuition fee in our college as, otherwise, the majority of parents can not pay training of children. In view of the set forth above reasons for us all is more difficult to acquaint children with music. We have simply catastrophic situation with a teaching material, in particular with sound materials.
